Research in the Disability Engineering and Rehabilitation Lab focuses on preventing secondary conditions associated with disabilities through interdisciplinary technologies and approaches. We study pressure ulcer prevention in individuals with spinal cord injuries, including the use of power wheelchair tilt/recline and alternating pressure cushions. In people with diabetes, we examine how pressure, shear, and temperature contribute to the development of neuropathic foot ulcers. We also design and evaluate power wheelchair interfaces to improve mobility and independence for children with cerebral palsy.
