I have been interested in studying the neurobiology of drug addiction. In my master degree training, I focused on studying the mechanisms underlying the formation and extinction of drug withdrawal associated memory, primarily using molecular biology approaches. Aspects of withdrawal can be associated with all kinds of cues and become conditioned. The withdrawal associated memory is often hard to extinguish and plays a significant role in relapse. The extinction can be accelerated if we understand its mechanism. However, I used acute drug exposure/withdrawal animal model which limited the generalization of my study.
In my current PhD training, I became more interested in studying the effect of chronic exposure to drugs of abuse (mainly amphetamine) on neurophysiology and cognitive functions. I’m especially interested in finding out if there are more adverse consequences when drug exposure occurs in adolescence and if there are age-dependent differences in drug-induced neuroadaptations. I’ve been using electrophysiology and molecular biology approaches to investigate the potential effect of amphetamine on mesocortical dopamine functions.
