Annual Events

SfN Night at NSP

"SfN at NSP" has become an annual event, featuring a dinner reception, an "SfN Pre-poster" session, and a chance to hear and honor our own faculty and special guests. The "pre-poster" session is a chance for those planning to attend the annual Society for Neuroscience meeting to show early versions of their posters and receive valuable comments and feedback before preparing the final versions.

SfN Night this year was on October 8. Next year's SfN Night will be on Tuesday, November 2.

SfN Annual Meeting

The Annual Meeting of the Society for Neuroscience is the main event of the year for many neuroscientists. It provides a forum for learning and professional development as over 31,000 attendees from around the world gather to present and share ideas. It is a quiet time for the program here, but a very active time at the meeting itself, with many members of the program attending.

The 2009 meeting was held in Chicago from October 17-21. An Illinois Neuroscience reception on Sunday, October 18, was well attended by current and former members of NSP and their friends and guests. The next Illinois at SfN reception is planned for 2011.

Future Annual Meetings:
2010     San Diego, CA    November 13-17
     2011     Washington, DC    November 12-16
2012     New Orleans, LA    October 13-17

Holiday Party

In early December, we have a late afternoon reception featuring light snacks and beverages, music, and plenty of holiday spirit. A good time to take a break and catch up.

The Holiday Party for 2009 is on December 2, 4:00 - 7:00 PM, at the Levis Center, 2nd floor.

Open House

The Open House is NSP's annual recruiting event, held each February. Top applicants are invited to visit the campus, meet members of the program and interview with faculty. This is our chance to showcase our program, meet future colleagues, and enjoy socializing with others in the program. Open House features a reception and poster session, a banquet, an after-dinner talk by a member of the Neuroscience Program faculty, and a student party following the banquet.

The OPEN HOUSE is February 18-20, 2010!

Brain Awareness Day

For the past ten years, UIUC's neuroscience community has been engaged in.educating the community about brain function with a Brain Awareness Day each spring. Although primarily for children grades K-12, all ages are welcome to attend. The date for Brain Awareness Day 2010 will be announced in the spring.
The day's main attractions are the interactive exhibits that are fun and.educational for the whole family. Some exciting past exhibits have included "Brain Passport" (Diana Thomas), "Food for Thought" (Beverly Lab) and "The Invincible Invertebrate" (Claire Miller, Joel Stary).

Grass Lecture

The Grass Lecture is sponsored by the NSP and the Society for Neuroscience. Distinguished speakers whose work is of very broad interest are invited to present these lectures. Our most recent speaker was Dr. Cori Bargmann, Torsten N. Wiesel Professor at Rockefeller University (Cori Bargmann's home page). Dr. Bargmann's stimulating lecture, and the subsequent reception in the Beckman Atrium, were well attended and greatly enjoyed.

The next Grass Lecture is planned for 2011.
